Yamato Dumpling is a modest, no-frills spot tucked into the bustling St Catherine St E strip, where the focus clearly lands on quality handmade dumplings that satisfy both locals and newcomers alike. This restaurant serves primarily Japanese-style dumplings with a straightforward menu that allows the flavors to shine through without distraction.

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, ideal for a relaxed dinner with family or friends. Inside, you’ll find a small dining area that encourages an unhurried experience centered on the food rather than ambiance flair. It’s the kind of place people drop into when craving something comforting and straightforward rather than elaborate or trendy.

The dumplings are the clear highlight, with beef, pork, lamb, tofu, rice noodle, and vegetable options that showcase a balance of simple, fresh ingredients and thoughtful seasoning. For those who prefer something beyond dumplings, the menu offers light sides like a tangy sweet and sour cucumber salad and hearty options such as wonton soup or Japanese fried chicken. This variety makes it easy to assemble a satisfying meal, whether you prefer steamed or fried versions.

Yamato Dumpling appeals strongly to people who appreciate handmade, authentic dumplings without fuss. It’s especially fitting for casual dinners or takeout — a point reflected in customer experiences that mention filling meals at reasonable prices and friendly service, even accommodating special dietary questions. The owners’ approachability adds to the down-to-earth atmosphere, making it welcoming to visitors unfamiliar with the cuisine.

The best time to visit is early evening or weekends when you might want a comforting meal to settle into after a day out in Montreal’s vibrant eastern neighborhoods. The restaurant's location makes it a convenient stop for locals in the area or travelers seeking a taste of something different without leaving the city core.

Overall, Yamato Dumpling offers a quiet but rewarding spot to enjoy thoughtfully prepared dumplings that pay attention to texture and seasoning. Regulars likely return for the consistent quality and the way the dishes feel like a warm, satisfying break from busier dining scenes nearby.

Last Saturday, my family went to Yamato Dumpling for dinner, and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We ordered four different types: Beef with Onion, Beef with Coriander, Pork with Cabbage, and a Vegetarian option that included cabbage, vermicelli, and carrot. All of the dumplings were delicious, but the beef varieties stood out the most. The Beef with Onion and Beef with Coriander dumplings were especially flavorful — juicy, well-seasoned, and not dry at all. Even our two picky kids enjoyed the meal, which says a lot about the taste and quality. Although Yamato Dumpling just open at the time of our visit and simple settings, the food was already impressive. In addition, the price was also reasonable. We’re looking forward to going back soon to try more items from their menu. This restaurant is definitely a new favorite for our family.

Ordered from Uber eats today and the food so far tastes delicious!!!! I ordered the Japanese fried chicken and wonton soup. My first time ordering and they included a little complimentary dessert on the side which was very good and kind of them. Definitely ordering again, 100% recommend :))

Amazing hand-made dumplings, both steamed and fried. Simple menu with good variety. Very good price, a filling meal for 5 came out only about $65 usd ($13 per person) or $90 ca.

We ordered the green onion and pork dumplings, steamed. However, there was a lot more going on than just pork and green onion because the flavor exuding from these dumplings was unbelievable. It must be how they season their pork, they were savory with a tinge of sweetness. The salad was recommended, because it pairs well with the dumplings. And it did not disappoint. All together we had a spectacular dining experience, and the owner was very accommodating and nice.

We just landed in Montreal and we’re craving dumplings. I had some food allergies so I called ahead of time. The owner greeted us with a warm smile and we started off with the pork cabbage dumplings & beef carrot dumplings. We ate 36 dumplings so quick, we just had to order another. We then ordered the pork and dill. I hands down can say these are the best dumplings I’ve had in my life. We are going to go back for more during our stay. Please go here!!!

Excellent food and service on a hot day! After wandering the beautiful streets of Montreal, Yamato Dumpling was the perfect spot to stop for lunch! The pork dumplings with Chinese cabbage was our favorite! And we enjoyed a refreshing mango/pineapple tea on our way out! All in all, it was a 5/5 experience!
